The story behind the phrase
Where did "Yay, indeed Jimmie. Yay, indeed." come from?
It starts in episode 1, straight after the welcome, when James says "yeah indeed Jimmie, I'm here". At that point it is a single line with no answer from Jimmie, so it seems to have been made up on the spot.
It works as a cheerful cue before James introduces himself and his co-host. By episode 38 he is calling the show "a yay occasion" and treating the "yay" as Jimmie's job.
How is "Yay, indeed Jimmie. Yay, indeed." used now?
It settled into the show's opening ritual, trading "yay" and "yay indeed" between the hosts before the introductions. In episode 166 James praises Jimmie for being "right on target with the enthusiastic yay", and in the express episodes it follows the "choo choo" greeting. It still opens the show in 2026.
When was "Yay, indeed Jimmie. Yay, indeed." first said?
It was first heard in episode 1, "A Quadruple Murder in Mississippi", on 18 January 2017, at about 0:00:35.
"Yeah, indeed, Jimmy, I'm here."
On the inaugural episode, straight after the welcome, James says "yeah indeed Jimmy, I'm here". It is only the one line at this point, with no second "yay indeed" back from Jimmie, so it looks coined on the spot; the full back-and-forth settles into its fixed shape over the following weeks.
