The story behind the phrase
Where did "Let's go on a trip, shall we?" come from?
It first appears in episode 40. After James's warning that anyone who thinks true crime and comedy don't mix should get off at "the last chance to leave the roller coaster", he says "let's go on a trip, shall we?" and Jimmie echoes it.
It gives the show a way to step out of the opening chat and warnings and into the week's town. It seems to have been improvised, as James quips that this is "not a tourist area" and the pair talk about leaving the previous week's New Hampshire.
How is "Let's go on a trip, shall we?" used now?
James uses it as the cue to travel to the case, usually right after the "shut up and give me murder" shout, and Jimmie sometimes says it himself. It also invites small bits of play, such as the pair asking whether the bags are packed. It is still used in 2026.
When was "Let's go on a trip, shall we?" first said?
It was first heard in episode 40, "Six Unthinkable Things", on 18 October 2017, at about 0:06:05.
"Uh but for the rest of you, for the awesome people who are left, all of you great people here who have not gone back at the last chance to leave the Roller Coaster sign, let's go on a trip."
After telling anyone who dislikes true crime to get off at the last chance to leave the roller coaster, James says "let's go on a trip"; Jimmie replies "shall we?" and James riffs that this is not a tourist area before they leave last week's New Hampshire. It sounds coined on the spot as a new way into the town section, with Jimmie instantly picking up the reply.
