No complaining later

What does "No complaining later" mean on Small Town Murder?

The warning at the end of the show's disclaimer: having explained that the podcast mixes true crime with comedy, the hosts tell anyone who does not fancy that to leave now and not complain once they have heard it. It works as a mock condition of entry, usually followed by the liquor-store accomplice analogy and a reminder that the listener has been warned.

The story behind the phrase

Where did "No complaining later" come from?

It starts to take shape in the opening disclaimer of episode 39, when James says that anyone who is on board is welcome "but we don't want to hear complaining later". Jimmie sums it up as "so no complaints". In episode 40 it becomes "no complaining afterwards".

It is a mock condition of entry. Having said that the show jokes about small towns, bumbling police and murderers, but never the victims, James warns anyone who dislikes mixing true crime and comedy to leave now. His liquor store getaway driver analogy makes the point that if you stay, you are in on it.

How is "No complaining later" used now?

It stayed as the closing line of the disclaimer, in many wordings: "no bitching afterwards", "no complaining later", "we did warn you". James sometimes dresses it up, as in episode 419 where he treats it like a bad date. It comes right before the "clear the lungs" shout and is still used in 2026.

When was "No complaining later" first said?

It was first heard in episode 39, "The Orbit Of A Killer", on 11 October 2017, at about 0:04:24.

"They've been through enough, but uh otherwise we gotta tell you guys, you know, if you're on board now, great, it's not that bad, but we don't want to hear complaining later."

James is reworking the disclaimer and says 'we don't want to hear complaining later', then immediately moves into the liquor-store analogy. The wording is not yet the fixed 'no complaining later', but the sign-off warning is taking shape here.
