The story
Belgrade is a town of 10,555 people in Gallatin County in southwestern Montana, about 20 minutes from Bozeman. This episode tells the disappearance and murder of Brad Brisbane.
Bradford Clare Brisbane was born on 13 February 1952 in Malta, Phillips County, Montana, the son of Clifford Leroy 'Buzz' Brisbane and Marianne Claire Brisbane. He trained as a physical education teacher and in 1973 married Rosaline Kovash, with whom he had two children, Jeremiah and Aaron. From 1974 to 1978 he taught at Belgrade High School, then became a Gallatin County deputy, later a canine officer with a German shepherd called Bear. He and Rosaline divorced in the early 1980s. On 19 August 1984 Brad married Maureen, known as Renee, and they had two more children, Parker and Mariah. He left the force, and the couple moved to West Yellowstone and ran the Silver Spur Cafe, while Brad taught part-time and coached the boys' basketball team.
They met at Alcoholics Anonymous and hunted together. They separated on 7 November.
He asked Brad not to tell anyone. Brad told Renee, took the rest of the day off from the school and was seen driving up Gallatin Canyon on Highway 191. That evening he told people that Brad had said he was sick of his wife, his job and the restaurant, borrowed $500 and left in a red sports car driven by a blonde woman, possibly with Washington plates.
Renee reported Brad missing on 10 November and told police she believed he was dead. His vehicle was found locked and undamaged at the truck stop. A couple of days later officers found him coating the camper with tar and he was seen pressure-washing the inside in freezing weather. A search of the camper found the brown carpet gone, tar under the new carpet, a car battery with acid spilled, a section of mismatched paneling, three bullet holes covered with tar and a bullet under the floor with blood on it. A curtain held a quarter-sized piece of human muscle, and the step held cerebellum tissue. Laser trajectories suggested someone standing had fired several times at a person on the floor with his head by the step.
On 1 December, with his attorney, he admitted the rat story was untrue and said Brad had been drunk and suicidal in the camper, that they had wrestled for the gun and Brad had been grazed, and that Brad had left in a red car while he fetched water. Renee and her children sued him for wrongful death. Searchers, including cadaver dogs, covered gravel pits near West Yellowstone but found nothing. In 1991 typed letters signed 'Brad' arrived, from Spokane and Mexico, and were traced to a typewriter at Brad's school office.
The case rested on DNA, new in Montana. Because Brad could not be sampled, laboratories compared tissue with blood from his first wife, his widow, his four children and his mother. The curtain muscle was tested by RFLP and the brain tissue by PCR, and both were consistent with Brad. The defence argued that there was no body and no crime, and a plant geneticist showed human blood on deer brain gave a human result.
With his cellmate Gregory Craig Carpenter he made a fake bomb and planted it by the warden's office. Brad is buried in Fur Ridge Cemetery in West Yellowstone.
