107 dildos

What does "107 dildos" mean on Small Town Murder?

James's incredulous reaction to a Fremont, New Hampshire case in which a man was found with 107 dildos. The absurd number became the show's shorthand for an excessive haul, brought back as a comparison whenever a case turns up an implausible collection of sex toys.

The story behind the phrase

Where did "107 dildos" come from?

It comes from episode 145, the Fremont, New Hampshire case. Going through the items found with a man, James says people have sex toys and don't care, "but he had 107 dildos", then double-takes: "how much too much... that's too many".

It was a reaction to the sheer number. James says he is not judging anyone's private life, and that you can have drawers full, but 107 seemed excessive. In episode 203 he adds that it probably doesn't seem so bad until the police are counting them one by one and releasing photos to the media.

How is "107 dildos" used now?

It became shorthand for an implausible haul, and came back as a callback the very next weeks, in episodes 146 and 147. James later cites it as the show's weirdest backstory in episode 253, and in episode 526 he compares another case's collection with it, "I don't think it's 107 dildo".

When was "107 dildos" first said?

It was first heard in episode 145, "Killing, Cover Up & A LOT of Sex Toys", on 14 November 2019, at about 1:36:43.

"Like so, I mean people don't care, that's out in the open, but he had 107 dildos."

James is reading the evidence list from the Fremont, New Hampshire case and says the man had 107 dildos. He immediately double-takes ("how much too much... that's too many diltos"), and seconds later lands on "107 is objectively too many dildos". It is coined on the spot as a reaction to the number, not an established joke.
