The story

The episode is set in El Rancho, a small place in north central New Mexico in Santa Fe County, about 25 minutes from Santa Fe, with a population of 1342.

In 2011 Lloyd Ortiz, 55, and his wife Dixie, 53, had been married 34 years and had two daughters, Angela and Sheree. Lloyd ran Ortiz Tile Contractors from the family home and worked 14-hour days. Dixie was the activities director at a nursing home in Los Alamos. In 1989 they adopted a seven-month-old boy, Steven, who had cerebral palsy and brain damage from being shaken as a baby. He walked, talked and became a well-liked churchgoer. In the early 2000s doctors prescribed him medical marijuana for constant headaches, so the family had a licence and 17 legal plants behind a locked fence. Sheree lived behind them with her husband Jesse Rios and their children.

On Sunday 19 June 2011, Father's Day, Sheree took enchiladas to her parents' house and found Dixie dead in the master bedroom with head wounds and a man in underwear with his face destroyed in the kitchen, whom she took for her father. It was Steven, struck 17 times and with a defensive cut on his thumb. Lloyd lay in the backyard under a tree, struck seven times. Dixie had been struck twice near the right temple. The state police came. Lloyd's wallet was full of cash, two safes held $4,000 and $80,000, and the marijuana plants were untouched. Police at first said the victims had been shot. A crime scene cleaning firm cleaned the house that evening, which destroyed much forensic evidence. A pickaxe or mattock was found in a field next to the house with the blood of all three victims and no fingerprints.

Sheree and Jesse had been at a casino and home after midnight. Jesse first said he heard noise and stood outside, then admitted he had grabbed a gun and chased a gray car in his truck after hearing someone shout 'hurry up, let's go'. Police said they had held more than 120 interviews in four states.

The car had been crushed.

Bail was refused, then set at $100,000 in June 2015 and paid. The Supreme Court confirmed it, vacating the aggravated burglary count.
